FACTA - Fair and Accurate Credit Reporting Act was signed into law December 4, 2003 by President Bush as an amendment to the (FCRA) Fair Credit Reporting Act. Under this amendment, consumers can request a free credit report from each of the 3 credit bureaus, Equifax, Experian, and Trans Union.
Annualcreditreport.com is the website that was established under this law were consumers can obtain this free credit report.
FACTA also allows for consumers to request a security freeze on their credit report when they are a victim of identity theft. This is also available to military service members who are leaving the country on deployment or change of duty station. This freeze helps prevent identity theft by making creditors contact the consumer when new credit is applied for.
Another provision under FACTA prevents businesses from printing more than 5 of you credit card account numbers on your credit card purchase receipts.
